The past year has been the most difficult I have ever experienced due to the fact that, for the first time ever, I was faced with life without my father.
His wise counsel, patient demeanor while hearing you out, tolerance for youthful exuberance and firmness at appropriate times enabled us discern the true meaning of leadership in turbulent times.
His sense of humuor endeared all to him in an atmosphere devoid of pretentious rigidity. He would ask how you were doing and expect much more than the customary curt answer. This was genuine concern in which the response would help both parties have a clearer understanding of actual circumstances.
We welcomed many into our home, some in transit for a few hours, days, months, years and even decades. From thence several stronger bonds were established because we had long learnt from the master of the house how to receive guests.
Whenever I meet him about a life-changing move he would sit me down and ask me to explain the situation and justifications for my choices; neither imposing himself nor exposing any fear, he would wish me well and pray until all was clear.
After battling with ill health for some period of time, regular hospital visits and so much medication recommended by the doctor, his weak heart gave up when we least expected.
Now we shall no longer hear his laughter or see his smile. May his soul rest in perfect peace, amin.
I am sure there are many who after reading this will find nothing new; they've been there long ago and have learnt to move on. My hope is that it touches them so they spare a thought and prayer for their lost ones too.
As for those whose parents are still alive, I say seize the moment and intensify your care and thoughts for them. Pamper them if you must, spoil them if you can, just make them happy. Time is finite and hence never enough. Use it wisely.
Oh! How I wish I could hear the Words of My Father again.
