Success is Relative

Yes, success is relative.

No, I am not talking about that smart, pretty, little girl who has taken Naija by storm, appearing everywhere from AY's show to skits with Youtube comedienne - Emmanuella, sometimes I wish I had also complained about my teachers and school fees ...

... I am referring to the different interpretations of success and how it affects us as humans.

Having a job in a multi-national oil company, a good duplex in a highbrow part of town and a sleek Mercedes G-Wagon would signal, to everyone that cares, you have "arrived". However, for others, that is not nearly enough until you attach a number of bank accounts running into hundreds of thousands or better still, millions. Did you say billions? Come on, let's not get too greedy, shall we?

Do you know that if you were to spend 100,000 Nigerian Naira daily, it would take you 27 years to exhaust N1 billion?! Even at its hugely devalued rate compared to the US dollar, currently around N360 to $1.

Anyway, back to what I was saying ...

Others might consider having just enough to cater for the family with basic needs like food, clothes, shelter and education. For them, that is success and they do not desire more because they feel it is a distraction, or a ready route to evil.

Some who think money is the root of all evil, go out of their way to avoid material things. They prefer to live spartan (no, not those formidable ancient Greek warriors) lives of austerity, hardship and toiling. May God save us from this kind of calamity, amin.

Fact of the matter is that success is defined by us all differently. It is relative to our experiences, values and dreams.

I say, to each his/her own.

Seek what will make you happy and contented. Search for what will impact you, your family and community positively.

Do not envy others' success, for you do not know what journey they have undertaken.

Rather work towards yours with as much vigour as you have conviction for.

May we be blessed.
