Paying for Disservice

Wonders will never end!

In Naija today things are somewhat tough and as we like to say 'times are hard'.

Earning a living is a struggle and those lucky to have jobs increasingly find the markets frowning at their meagre salaries. Items bought last month, have suddenly decided to shrink in size today with the same amount. The merchants say it is not their fault, so as far as I am concerned it must be the products that are conspriring to make life even more difficult for the common man.

Anyway, what is even more worrisome is the fact that not only do you get less after payment, some vendors even go the extra mile to give you "gyara" - those extras we love so much to add to our initial purchases.You know how we just love to receive such freebies, right? :)

However, this one is a negative freebie, and what you get is indifference served with arrogance and sometimes seasoned with embarrassingly humiliating moments all because you PAID or WANT TO PAY for a service!

I went to the Kubwa train station in Abuja last week by 3pm to get a ticket for my return trip to Kaduna; the staff in charge ignored me for over 10 minutes and went about her way without even a word. So I patiently awaited her return and greeted her twice when she did. I was shocked when she snapped back at me that she had heard me and answered the first time; I almost said "sorry ma".

She impatiently waited for my enquiry.

"Can I please buy a ticket to Kaduna?"

"No!" she almost snarled. "Until 5pm"

I went to find a seat to wait, wondering why despite the fact I knew I came much earlier for the 6pm train, I had to wait that long to buy a ticket. More annoying was why I had to meet such an unfriendly, discourteous person at the front office of a service-oriented business.

Interestingly that same week, an aunt had an experience where snack vendors on the train refused to sell to her because they were being 'reserved' for the return journey! Can you imagine that?!

Why do we have to continually pay for disservice?
