Yippee! 2019 is here!! Let's go and get addicted!!!
Wait ... What?! Addicted? Are you out of your mind? I can imagine these and many more questions racing through your mind.
Sweat not, I shall explain what I mean. Ok, you can sweat a little ... What's life without a little thrill and adventure? :D
We, too often, get fixated on negative things to the detriment of almost all the positive things around us. Yes, I know terrible things are happening and humanity requires us to empathise. But we should do that and then move on, otherwise we will get stuck in a rut and nothing good comes out of that.
In trying to make the best of our circumstances, we must find useful things with which to engage our minds. This is very important because being a very powerful part of us, the mind can help us focus on valuable tasks or distract us unto destructive stuff.
One such useful thing to focus on could be COMMUNICATION, specifically Public Speaking. It is amongst the top skills to learn, according to wikipedia, in this new age of enormous computing power and Artificial Intelligence that will render most jobs obsolete.
Towards the end of last year, I attended a couple of life changing events and I implore you to seize the opportunity to be part of such outings whenever you can. The sooner the better, of course. I shall tell you about one:
The independently organised TED event titled "TedxUngwanRimi". If you are unfamiliar with TED events let me just say that you have been missing a fora of 'ideas worth spreading' (which incidentally is their tagline) where all kinds of experts share experiences and impactful findings with the world.
TEDx events on the other hand are independently organised events (that's what the 'x' stands for) that must follow certain guidelines of the franchisor i.e. TED.
The one I attended was organised by an inspiring chap called Niyi Soyinka (err ... I don't know if he is related to the nobel laureate; maybe I'll ask him when next we meet :) ).
Anyway we had an exciting array of speakers from a shrewd businessman with employees who don't earn a salary to an educationist on a mission to overhaul the system for the better; there was an inspiring lady whose passion for ideas was so infectious and a Canadian who, in just 2 weeks, has fallen in love with the same Nigeria we complain about.
Also amongst the line-up were an economist whose knowledge of the interactions of politics, economics and technology in society makes an intriguing discourse; a book-lover (like myself, or is she more so?) whose opinion of bibliophilia is both curious and fascinating; a personal development guru whose single but powerful call to 'believe' is more impactful than the mere seven words used to spell it.
We remained spellbound as an astute gentleman emphasised the significance of self-storytelling in our lives and another highly experienced development expert reiterated the vital role of ideas and then the key issue he referred to as the need to harness the energy of our youth.
Of course, I can not forget the fun and rhythmic beats of a cool crooner named Zkiel and a martial arts expert who showed us ways to neutralise or disarm assailants. I learnt enough to pray fervently never to find myself in any situation that would need such skills.
Events like this are an eye-opener as to great, yet real, things being done by others and probable ways to participate, contribute or even launch ones own initiatives.
Here's hoping for an eventful 2019 to us all!
