Do You Have Friends?

"Don't you be ashamed of how you feel when someone

Lends you a helping hand

Because the bottomline is bein' for real in

Every way that you can"

- Shalamar (1982)

Do I have friends?

I found myself asking this question several weeks ago and it has been pre-occupyng my mind ever since.

Who are the people that we hang out with? Better still, who do we let hang around us?

Friends should support you in times of need, advise you when you derail and cheer you on when you strive to accomplish something worthwhile. Of course, they should also be there with you to celebrate when you succeed.

Friends must not envy you, talk behind your back or laugh when things go wrong in your life.

Friends need not be from your village, tribe or race.

While friends are mostly considered to be people you meet outside your home e.g. neighbourhood, schools, etc., there are many within your immediate and extended family.

Recent events have proven to me that I indeed have friends. I have the best friends in the world. Of course, that is my entitled opinion, so go and find your own friends and opinions ;D

I have seen support, the likes of which would make a humane heart shed tears of joy and pray for God's blessings for them and their families abundantly. I have seen genuine concern shown, empathetic advice given wholeheartedly and selfless support offered.

I pray to never forget my friends, you know yourselves and might even be reading this article right this moment. I want to say a very big thank you for believing in me, trusting me and supporting me to be the best version of myself. I also pray to pay it forward so that we contribute to a never ending cycle of kindness across the world.

Thank you my friends.

What is your definition of friendship? Do you have friends? Are you thankful or resentful?
