Are Football Fans Dumb?
It is World Cup Season!
Expectedly everywhere is agog with excitement and disappointment over who is winning, who is losing and who is "stagnating' - alright I admit, goal-less matches (or draws as they are more technically termed) can mean progress for some and a setback for others depending on their rankings. Draws can also be considered as commendable or deplorable, depending on who is playing whom.
But that is not the focal point of this piece.
And before I go further, let me say I forgive you. Yes, you the ardent football fan (I did not say fanatic o! Ehen!!) who might have let loose some unprintable words about me because of the title of this blogpost ... :) Lol
But the question still remains - are football fans dumb to:
- support teams of countries they have never been to? People they do not know? People who don't know them?
- quarrel (and oftentimes, fight) over disputes on who played better, scored more or was 'favoured' by the referee?
- spend countless hours in front of TV screens at home, a club, viewing centre or neighbour's?
- follow several other matches online to view statistics?
- flock betting offices risking hard earned money that could be put to other arguably better use?
- enjoy a sport so much, even though outcomes are beyond their control?
- obsess over football players whose earnings defy average imagination by running into millions of dollars after just a few weeks of play, while spectators end up spending own resources e.g. time, money, etc.?
What can we learn from all this?
Personally, I see committment, loyalty and dedication all through their activities.
All things practiced in moderation can not be said to be dumb. It is when fanaticism takes over obsession that we should begin to worry. When not much thought is put into inconveniencing others, then we should worry. When unsustainable loans or losses are taken that could plunge entire families into despair, then we must not only worry but take remedial action.
Every person has his or her obsession and that in itself is human. However, when the subjective mind is over-ridden and reasonable thought becomes impossible, that is where the problem starts.
I say be a fan and not a fanatic!
